Benicaros gains EFSA Novel Food approval and ‘competitive advantage’

Benicaros, Ingredion’s newly acquired patented prebiotic carrot-fiber (RG-I) ingredient, has received EFSA Novel Food approval under EU Regulation 2026/1306, allowing use in food supplements and functional foods across the EU within safety limits. The authorization grants a competitive advantage and five-year exclusivity, supporting gut microbiome benefits (e.g., Bifidobacterium growth, short-chain fatty acids) and making replication difficult due to protected clinical data, manufacturing process, and regulatory barriers.
