Could folic acid fortification improve allergy rates in Croatian children?
A Croatian cross-sectional study published in Nutrients found that folate deficiency was more common in children with atopic diseases and asthma, and was associated with higher IgE levels and eosinophilic inflammation, suggesting a potential link between folate status and childhood allergic outcomes. However, after adjusting for age the association with asthma disappeared, indicating that while folic acid may influence immune regulation and allergy risk, causality remains unproven and further research is needed.
