Football Association staff are reviewing security arrangements around England’s team hotel in Mexico City before their last-16 tie against the World Cup co-hosts after Ecuador’s players endured a sleepless night prior to their defeat in the capital on Tuesday.

The Ecuadorian football federation has made an official complaint to Fifa after dozens of Mexico fans gathered outside their hotel in Santa Fe on Monday night before their last-32 match, making an almost constant noise until the small hours with horns, loudspeakers and motorcycle engines. Such guerrilla tactics from fans are not uncommon in Latin American football, and the FA is well aware that the England team hotel could also be targeted.
