Health Canada’s Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) has published a prebiotics monograph, establishing a regulatory framework for prebiotic ingredients and claims in Canada, based on ISAPP’s 2017 definition. The monograph lists accepted prebiotic substances, clarifies the distinction between prebiotics and fiber, and was developed in collaboration with industry groups such as the International Probiotics Association (IPA) and Global Prebiotics Association (GPA). Both associations praised the process for its transparency and collaborative approach, while GPA noted the need for ongoing engagement to include emerging ingredients. The NNHPD emphasized its regulatory independence throughout the process and plans to present further details at the upcoming Probiota Americas conference.
