The Atlas Obscura Guide to the 2027 Total Solar Eclipse

On August 2, 2027, the Moon's shadow will cross southern Spain, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. Near Luxor, in the Nile Valley, totality will last six minutes and twenty-three seconds.

That number is the whole story. Most total eclipses give you two or three minutes. The celebrated North American eclipse of 2024 managed four and a half at its very best. Six minutes and twenty-three seconds is the longest totality available on easily accessible land until the year 2114 — eighty-seven years from now, which for most readers of this sentence means: this one, or none.

It gets better. Luxor in August has a cloud cover probability somewhere between one and twenty percent, close to the highest certainty an eclipse chaser can buy anywhere on Earth. The path across central Egypt is roughly 250 kilometres wide. And the shadow falls across the greatest concentration of ancient monuments in the world, built by a civilisation that organised its entire cosmology around the sun going away and coming back.

Eclipse chasers have been calling it the eclipse of the century since 2024. They are not exaggerating, and hotels along the path have been selling out for a year already.

Why Luxor, specifically

The path of totality crosses ten countries. Only a handful are realistic destinations, and one is clearly best.

Luxor sits close to the centre line, gets close to the maximum duration available anywhere, and — unlike most of the path — has an airport, hotels, and infrastructure built for large numbers of visitors. Maximum eclipse falls around 1:05 in the afternoon local time, with the sun 82 degrees above the horizon, almost directly overhead.

Cairo is not in the path. This is the single most common planning error and it is worth stating plainly: you can stand in Cairo on August 2, 2027 and see a partial eclipse, which is to a total eclipse roughly what a photograph of a meal is to dinner. Aswan gets four to five minutes. Luxor gets the full six.

The reason to be there rather than anywhere else

Ancient Egypt built machines for tracking the sun, and several of them still work.

The clearest is the Temple of Abu Simbel, completed around 1244 BCE for Rameses the Great — the pharaoh who became Shelley's Ozymandias. Four colossal statues, each twenty metres high, face the desert. But the building's real achievement is hidden inside: it was constructed along the axis of the sun, so that on two days a year light travels the length of the temple and floods the innermost sanctum, illuminating three of the four figures seated there. Ra, Amun, and Rameses himself.

Only the fourth, Ptah, the creator-god, is left in shadow.

The temple was cut apart and moved wholesale in the 1960s to save it from the rising water behind the Aswan High Dam — its statues cut into three-ton blocks, the mountain it was carved into lifted along with it. UNESCO's World Heritage Convention was created, in fact, in order to do this. It still works. Every February 22nd and October 22nd, at dawn, the light still arrives.

In Luxor itself, the Colossi of Memnon have stood for 3,400 years and were, for centuries, an acoustic wonder of the ancient world — the northern statue famous throughout the Roman Empire for the sound it made at dawn.

The rest of the path, honestly

The shadow makes landfall in southern Spain — Cádiz is in the path, as is Gibraltar — before crossing to Tangier in Morocco. Both are legitimate alternatives with real advantages: easier logistics for European travellers, far shorter flights, and cities worth visiting for their own sake. The trade-off is duration. Totality at the Spanish end is a fraction of what Luxor gets, and August cloud risk on the Atlantic coast is higher than in the Egyptian desert.

If duration is what you came for, go to Egypt. If you simply want to see one, Spain is a great deal less complicated.

The path also crosses Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. Several are subject to serious travel advisories and some are effectively closed to leisure travel. Check your own government's current guidance before planning anything, and treat any operator selling packages to a place your foreign ministry advises against with real scepticism. An eclipse is six minutes long. It is not worth it.

What to do with the twelve months

Book now, and book flexibly. Hotels along the Egyptian path have been filling since 2024 and prices are climbing. This is the rare trip where booking eighteen months out is not excessive.

Decide between the city and the desert. Luxor gets the crowds and the monuments; the point of greatest duration falls just southeast of the city, in open desert between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea. A few seconds more, and considerably fewer people.

Get proper eclipse glasses, and understand that they come off only during totality and go straight back on the moment the sun reappears.

Give yourself days on either side. August in Upper Egypt is extremely hot, and the monuments deserve more than a rushed morning. The eclipse is six minutes. The trip should not be built around six minutes.

And be somewhere you'd want to be anyway. Cloud is unlikely in Luxor but not impossible, and the only insurance against an eclipse that doesn't happen is a destination worth the journey regardless. On this particular path, that problem solves itself.
