MagSafe is typically known for charging only, but there are use cases for it as just a mounting technology/use case. If you don’t want to charge your iPhone in your car or you have a wired CarPlay setup, you might want to use it just for mounting. That’s what the ESR OmniLock for MagSafe Car Mount is designed to do. Let’s take a look.

Last week, it transpired that Apple supplier Tata Electronics had been the subject of a data breach, with hundreds of gigabytes of files leaking online.

If you’re curious to try macOS Golden Gate while it’s still in beta, I highly recommend installing it on a separate APFS volume instead of your main volume. Installing macOS 27 on your main volume would replace macOS Tahoe, leaving you at the mercy of any bugs or compatibility issues that arise with the software and hardware you use.
Unlike iOS and iPadOS betas, macOS betas can pose a greater risk due to the complexity of macOS, which includes support for legacy software and hardware. I’ve been burned too many times in the past with hardware and software that didn’t work properly for months until the inevitable updates came after the public version was released later that fall. In my opinion, it’s just not worth it.
The good news is, thanks to APFS, you can easily create a separate volume and silo the macOS Golden Gate beta installation away from your production Tahoe volume. This allows you to test the macOS beta in full while retaining the stability and reliability of the current public release. Watch our full hands-on video walkthrough for a complete step-by-step guide, and be sure to subscribe to 9to5Mac on YouTube for more macOS tutorials.
In addition to several betas released today, Apple is also rolling out new release candidates for macOS Sonoma 14.8.8 and macOS Sequoia 15.7.8. Here are the details.

Some of the recent Apple price hikes exceeded 50%, while the cost of upgrading memory and storage has literally doubled in some cases.
The company has said that it’s “working tirelessly to find solutions” to the problem, but when might we expect prices to revert – if ever … ?
If you’re a long-time T-Mobile subscriber on a plan you took out years ago, the company may have some bad news for you. The carrier is closing what it says are more than 1,100 different legacy “plan codes” and moving subscribers onto new ones, with price increases or reductions in usage limits likely …
A maxed out MacBook Pro has never been cheap given Apple’s pricing on both RAM and SSD upgrades, but the recent price hikes mean that the 16-inch model now tops out at a five-figure sum.
John Gruber ran the numbers and noted that while the base model prices only went up by around 14%, there were massive increases to both RAM and storage options …
We learned yesterday that Apple is trying to persuade the Trump administration to allow it to buy memory chips from two Chinese companies blacklisted by the Pentagon, CXMT and YMTC.
Apple previously sought permission from the Biden administration to do the same thing back in 2022, and that did not go well – despite promising to use the chips only for iPhones sold in China …
Apple just announced unprecedented price increases for the majority of its product lineup, with only iPhone and Apple Watch not yet seeing a price hike. This is because of the AI-driven memory crisis, caused by AI data centers buying up loads of memory supply, putting tons of pressure on the market.
Apple tried to hold out for quite a while, but the situation got out of hand. It’s worth noting that these memory pressures have existed for the entirety of the year, and it’s only now getting to the point where it’s unsustainable. Nonetheless, we’ll be diving into the why of it all, and when you should expect things to get better.
Later this year, Apple will be debuting an updated version of the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips – a long awaited refresh. The current Mac Studio, released in early 2025, includes an M4 Max and M3 Ultra chip, so at least on the high end, it’s pretty behind.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the M5-based Mac Studio, which should just be a chip upgrade, is still on track to launch this year. Looking ahead to 2028, there may be more interesting changes in the pipeline.

We’re about 3 weeks out from when Apple unveiled iOS 27 to the world at WWDC26, and it’s still safe to say: this is an incredible update. It’s incredibly performant, and besides some small quirks and a little battery drain, it feels much more usable than iOS 26.5.
While iOS 27 does support every device that ran iOS 26, the same isn’t true for iPadOS. A number of older iPadOS 26 devices will not be receiving the iPadOS 27 update, which I think is quite a shame – and Apple should mitigate this one way or another.

Every now and then, I have to step outside my usual ecosystem to deploy a Windows PC for a specific role/task. I recently had to set up a new Dell laptop, and the entire experience was a harsh reminder of how good we have it in the Apple IT world. Deploying this new PC made me appreciate everything Apple has built into macOS and the entire setup process from beginning to end.

To me, e-ink is one of the most underappreciated technologies in the world today. I love my Kindle Paperwhite. I really wish Apple made e-ink devices. However, SwitchBot has officially entered this market with the new SwitchBot Weather Station. It combines an E-ink screen, iCloud calendar syncing, and Matter-compatible environmental sensors into a single device.

From Journal app writing prompts and section links in Notes, to much-improved 3D buildings in Apple Maps, iOS 27 is packed with awesome new enhancements.
Apple’s price increases were both swift and dramatic. As some of us suspected, there was just over a week between CEO Tim Cook warning that the move would be unavoidable and the new pricing taking effect.
The increases were substantial in both percentage and absolute terms. The highest percentage increase was the Apple TV 4K, with a 55% increase …

Earlier this week, I outlined three reasons for agreeing with Mark Gurman that the Apple price increases could be imminent, and that indeed proved to be the case.
iPhones have escaped the increases, but they are otherwise both broad-reaching and pretty dramatic. But perhaps the most surprising thing is that the MacBook Neo has been included …
Apple just implemented major price increases for a ton of Mac and iPad models. For example, the MacBook Neo just got $100 more expensive, while the MacBook Pro jumped a whopping $300. MacBook Air is also now $200 more expensive.

I have been using the new D5 charger for a bit, and there is a lot to like about it. Here is what you need to know.
