13 Aalto projects placed on UNESCO World Heritage List

A collection of 13 buildings in Finland designed by Aino, Elissa, and Alvar Aalto has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Known collectively as the Aalto Works, the nomination was submitted in 2025 by Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture and prepared by the Finnish Heritage Agency in collaboration with the Alvar Aalto Foundation, ICOMOS Finland, and the owners of the nominated sites.

Five of the newly listed buildings are located in Helsinki, making the Finnish capital home to the largest concentration of sites included in the UNESCO designation. Helsinki projects from the Aaltos include the Aalto House, Studio Aalto, the National Pensions Institute (KELA), the House of Culture, and Finlandia Hall.

According to UNESCO, the selected buildings were recognized not only for their architectural significance but also for demonstrating how architecture can contribute to wellbeing, equality and community life. The works have also been acknowledged for their influence on...
