Following our previous visit to Touloukian Touloukian, we are keeping our Meet Your Next Employer series in Boston this week to explore the work of Annum Architects. Formerly Ann Beha Architects, the firm has amassed a portfolio that “embraces the dynamic discourse between heritage and the future.” Last year, the firm was among those invited to join the Northwest Arkansas Design Excellence Program alongside BIG and Studio Gang, while in 2024 we reported on the firm’s joining the design team for Vermont's Shelburne Museum. Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for an Interior Architect / Interior Designer to join their Boston team. For candidates interested in applying for a position or anybody interested in learning more about the firm’s output, we have rounded up four cultural projects by Annum Architects that exemplify the firm’s ethos. Snøhetta has unveiled a new masterplan for the future of Paimio Sanatorium, a Finnish modernist building designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto. The proposal would see the site transformed into a destination for hospitality, wellness, and culture. Image credit: Proloog/SnøhettaImage credit: Proloog/Snøhetta Developed in collaboration with the Paimio Sanatorium Foundation, the proposal outlines a long-term vision for adapting the former tuberculosis sanatorium while preserving the principles that informed the original design. Completed in 1933, the building was conceived as a therapeutic environment, with architecture, light, fresh air, and surrounding forest all considered parts of the treatment of tuberculosis patients. Image credit: Proloog/Snøhetta The masterplan proposes converting the former surgery wing into a 200-seat auditorium with a dedicated visitor entrance, allowing events to operate independently from the site’s day-to-day functions. The existing patient wing would be adapted ...
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Department of Education’s narrowed definition of “professional degree,” a decision that could help determine how much federal loan funding architecture students can access. As Archinect previously reported, architecture was left out of the Department’s new professional degree classification under the Trump administration’s student aid overhaul. That distinction matters because students in programs classified as professional degrees may qualify for higher federal borrowing limits than standard graduate students. According to Inside Higher Ed, U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell ruled that the Education Department had gone beyond Congress’s instructions by limiting the category to 11 fields. NASFAA reports that the ruling temporarily restores the broader existing federal definition while litigation continues.
Other structures he’s romantically judged in a positive light: the Elitch Carousel Dome...The Supreme Camp of the American Woodmen at 2100 Downing St...and the University Building on 16th Street...And to be clear, not every building gets the nod. The indubitably classic Mayan Theatre on Broadway gets friend-zoned Teague Bohlen writes about Colorado Public Radio host Ryan Warner's social media series “Would I Date This Denver Building?,” in which Warner evaluates local architecture as if each building were a potential romantic partner. Among the buildings to receive his tongue-in-cheek treatment are the Rossonian Hotel, described as “marriage material,” the Elitch Carousel Dome, imagined as a wistful divorcé, and the Mayan Theatre, which gets firmly friend-zoned. Warner says the project is really about making architecture feel more approachable, giving people permission to talk about buildings through personality, memory, and emotion rather than technical vocabulary. The CN Tower is marking its 50th anniversary today, sitting still as one of Toronto’s most recognisable landmarks. To mark the occasion, architecture firm WZMH Architects has released archival material detailing the origins of the scheme and a wider urban redevelopment project it would have sat in, which was never fully realized. Archival material courtesy of WZMH Architects The tower emerged from Metro Centre, a 1968 master plan that proposed transforming Toronto’s railway lands through a large-scale redevelopment that included the demolition of Union Station. Although the wider scheme was ultimately abandoned, the scheme’s communications tower advanced to construction and was completed in 1976, becoming the world’s tallest free-standing structure at the time. Archival material courtesy of WZMH Architects Working alongside John Andrews Architects, WZMH Architects served as Architect of Record for the project, developing construction documentation and overseeing construction administ...
Montréal-based YH2 has completed an award-winning residential scheme overlooking Lake Memphremagog in Québec's Potton region. Titled "Inhabited Topography: A Dialectic of Place," the project has received an Award of Excellence in Architecture from the Ordre des architectes du Québec in its 2026 awards programme. Image credit: Maxime BrouilletImage credit: Maxime Brouillet The design of the scheme responds to a steep, wooded site that descends sharply to the lake, shaped by the terrain rather than imposing upon it. According to the design team, the house was conceived as an intervention that minimizes the scheme’s visual impact while strengthening the relationship between home and landscape. After softening again in April, business conditions at U.S. architecture firms deteriorated more significantly in May, according to the latest AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index. Released this morning, the May ABI score fell to 44.5, down sharply from April's 48.3 and marking the lowest national reading since January. Any score below 50.0 indicates a decline in billings compared to the previous month. The report suggests that ongoing economic uncertainty, including inflationary pressure tied to higher energy prices and the conflict in Iran, is continuing to cause some clients to delay or pause new projects. New project inquiries also slipped below 50.0 for the first time in four months, while the value of newly signed design contracts weakened to its lowest level since January. Firm leaders also appear less confident about the coming quarter. According to the AIA, one quarter of responding firm leaders now expect their billings to decline by 5 percent or more in the third quarte...

A few months after winning a closely watched legal battle over the right to move beyond its founder's name, Zaha Hadid Architects has done exactly that. The London-based practice has officially rebranded as simply ZHA, unveiling a new visual identity and website as it marks a new chapter a decade after Zaha Hadid's death in 2016. The rebrand follows a March ruling by the UK Court of Appeal, which found that the practice was not required to indefinitely retain the "Zaha Hadid" name or continue paying royalties to the Zaha Hadid Foundation. The decision overturned an earlier High Court ruling, clearing the way for the firm to end the trademark licensing agreement on reasonable notice and giving it greater freedom to define its future identity. While the name is changing, the practice says its ambitions are not. Now an employee-owned firm of nearly 500 professionals, ZHA describes the move as an evolution rather than a departure, one intended to honor Hadid's legacy while reflecting th...

Former HOK CEO and Chairman Patrick MacLeamy has encouraged architects to think more like the creators of smartphones when navigating the future of the profession. The comments came as part of a wide-ranging discussion Archinect had with MacLeamy last month on business and economics in architecture. “Architects must become relevant by rescuing what good design really means and what good service means,” MacLeamy told Archinect. “Good design is not superficial. It's about buildings that work really well, that serve their clients’ needs.” “My ‘Exhibit A’ is the iPhone,” MacLeamy added. “It’s well designed, it fits in my hand, and it’s useful as hell. It is indispensable now. Steve Jobs and his team came up with a great design that not only looks good but works exceptionally well. The move comes as the Saudi government reportedly is redirecting funds from The Line to infrastructure such as ports and data centers. Semafor further reports that NEOM projects along the Red Sea coast are also postponed, while the Trojena mountain resort will not receive any further funding until 2030 either. Serpentine has offered a first look at the completed 2026 Serpentine Pavilion designed by Mexico City-based studio LANZA atelier, ahead of its June 6th opening in London’s Kensington Gardens. Founded by Isabel Abascal and Alessandro Arienzo in 2015, the studio was announced as the designers in January. Image credit: Iwan Baan, courtesy of Serpentine This year’s pavilion takes inspiration from the “serpentine wall” or “crinkle-crankle wall,” a historical brick construction method characterized by alternating curves. Originating in ancient Egypt and later introduced to East Anglia in the UK by Dutch engineers, the undulating wall form provides structural stability while using fewer bricks than a straight wall. The design also references the nearby Serpentine Lake, named for its curved shape. The issue was canceled in February 2025, with the board saying that “in the current legal and political climate, organizations must weigh the ability to operate with their values and mission to resist injustice.” The decision led to claims of academic censorship, a petition to reinstate the issue, and a call to boycott the ACSA Annual Meeting in New Orleans, which was scheduled to be held one month later. Twilight LA, a new exhibition by Los Angeles–based architect and SCI-Arc professor Herwig Baumgartner, reimagines domestic space through a series of AI-generated environments. Moving between architecture and moving image, the work presents residential interiors that feel familiar at first glance, then subtly off. Across seven projects shown as generative video installations, Baumgartner uses custom-trained AI models to reinterpret his own residential designs. Rather than generating architecture directly, the models are trained on environmental systems, with each scene shaped through selection, editing, and recomposition. “What you see is not accidental,” he says, “but neither is it fully predetermined, it’s the result of navigating between control and discovery.” Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles, a city shaped as much by image and atmosphere as by its physical fabric, the work leans into the overlap between reality and simulation. The interiors are notably unoccupied. In pla...

A team led by Kengo Kuma & Associates and Canadian firm Paul Raff Studio has won the international competition to redesign the Banff National Park Visitor Centre in Alberta, Canada. Organized by Parks Canada in partnership with the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, the competition invited six shortlisted teams to reimagine the 200 Block of Banff Avenue, the main civic gateway into Banff National Park. Architecture speaks silently...The attempt to revive classical architecture under current political conditions is an attempt that speaks silently about dismantling not just the ideas that were expressed in 2020, but the institutions of civil rights. And so it speaks silently the language of white nationalism. And that is well known, but it’s very difficult to literally demonstrate or prove. That’s why it’s so effective, because it’s easily deniable. Layla A. Jones spoke with a number of architectural historians including Mabel Wilson and Reinhold Martin about federal architecture under President Donald Trump and the attempt to remake DC in his gold-colored image.

Pooja Khairnar, founder of PK Inception, received the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture, which recognizes architects under the age of 45 leading their own practices. Based in Nashik, India, PK Inception focuses primarily on projects in rural communities and underserved regions, with much of its work centered on lower-income and tribal populations. “Pooja Khairnar is a very lucid architect who doesn’t compromise aesthetic, beauty or high-quality design in her architecture,” the jury noted. “Her practice is anchored in local realities and materialities, and driven by a responsibility to address the issues she sees around her.” ...

To the surprise of literally no one, the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts yesterday granted its final approval for Trump's Triumphal Arch pet project. Following the April release of further details on the proposed 250-foot structure, the commission, composed of Trump appointees, voted at their Thursday meeting not only to advance the plan at a conceptual level for further review but instead to sign off on it right away. The body acknowledged, and successfully disregarded, some 600 new written public comments on the proposal, only three of which were in favor. Opposing groups, including preservation groups and local residents, were also present during the meeting, which took place at D.C.'s National Building Museum. The International Union of Architects and UN Habitat have unveiled the winners for the latest edition of the UIA 2030 Award, recognizing projects that “demonstrate design excellence while contributing meaningfully to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” The initiative invites architects around the world to submit completed projects. The biennial event is now in its third cycle, having been launched in 2022. The winners have been divided into six categories, aligning with the UN SDGs. According to the jury, the winning projects “demonstrate how architecture and urban design can provide integrated responses to climate adaptation, ecological restoration, housing, public space, participation, and social inclusion.” The winners are as follows:
The Trump Administration has announced that Penn Transformation Partners (Halmar and Skanska) has been appointed Master Developer of the overhaul of New York Penn Station. As we reported last year, Trump took over the project from the MTA, criticizing its management and budget. Announcing the move, the Department of Transportation also said that $200 million of additional funding would be provided to the project, which will reportedly cost $7 billion. The project hopes to break ground in 2027. The plan, which has been in development for over five years, was stalled after the pandemic due to the new financial realities of the CRE market in Midtown. The National Civic Art Society released their own "classically inspired" alternative design last year that would reposition Madison Square Garden.
After coming increasingly close to crossing into growth territory over the last two months, April's new AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index, however, reports that the much-anticipated moment of expansion still has not yet arrived, and declining billings would remain the reality for most American architecture firms as economic instability drags on. Released this morning, the latest ABI score of 48.3 marks a significant drop from the essentially flat readings from March at 49.8 and February at 49.4 (any score below 50.0 indicates a decline in billings compared to the previous month). Inquiries into new projects, however, continued to rise for the third consecutive month in April, and the value of new design contracts remained "close to returning to growth." "April’s economic picture was mixed as employers continued to add jobs, but inflation accelerated as higher energy prices tied to the conflict in Iran drove up costs," AIA Chief Economist Richard Branch summarized the data. "Wh...

The winners of the 2026 edition of The Daylight Award have been announced, recognizing architects and researchers whose work explores the role of daylight across different scales, from microscopic aquatic ecosystems to dense urban environments. The curators of the Venice Architecture Biennale 2027, Chinese architects Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu, today revealed the theme for the 20th International Architecture Exhibition, and it arrives with a title that sounds less like a curatorial statement and more like a direct challenge to the profession: Do Architecture — For the Possibility of Coexistence Facing a Real Reality. If recent architecture biennales have often leaned toward theory, speculation, and research-heavy installations, the current curatorial team seems intent on pulling the conversation back toward the physical act of building itself. "We believe that architecture is not only something to be discussed but, more importantly, something to be done first-hand," the curators explained in the announcement. "The philosophy of architecture is a philosophy of how to do: A practice that confronts real reality, in real places, through real construction." Their framing repeatedly returns to construction, craftsmanship, local mate...

Alexander Walter connected with Andrew Linn and Jack Becker of Washington, DC-based BLDUS, for Archinect's latest Studio Snapshot. We learn they "think of BLDUS houses as wood salads: organic ingredients tastefully combined, balanced for flavor and texture. Living on a diet of salads has kept us lean, and we’re ready to bulk up on something heartier. The historic DC built environment is full of spectacular masonry buildings, and our pre-BLDUS experience with brick and stone at a civic scale has given us the technical know-how to work on this next course." rubinazainab "Really enjoyed...The…ethos and the idea that a modest project can lift the life next door stays with you." The Royal Institute of British Architects has recognized 43 projects as winners of the RIBA London Awards 2026. The projects ranged from the reimagining of the Natural History Museum’s gardens, to a major mixed-use west waterfront development in Brentford, and a block of 75 later-living flats in East Ham. “This is a landmark year for RIBA as we mark 60 years of our Awards and the impact of past winners on society,” RIBA President Chris Williamson said about the projects. “Over six decades, the Awards have charted a cultural journey across the UK, reflecting how architecture has responded to changing needs in education, industry, work and home life. Today, as in 1966, we celebrate architecture that sets new standards for how we live and shape our communities — and reminds us just how important it is to keep raising the bar.” Each of the Regional list winners will now go on to compete in the RIBA National Award competition, the winner of which is expected to be announced on July 9th. Nearly 40 years after I.M. Pei transformed the Louvre Museum with his once-controversial pyramid, the storied Paris art landmark is gearing up for another major architectural intervention — this time led by STUDIOS Architecture Paris and Selldorf Architects. Earlier today, French officials selected the team’s proposal as the winner of the international "Louvre-Nouvelle Renaissance" competition as part of the new “Grande Colonnade” project, an ambitious overhaul aimed at untangling circulation, improving access, and giving the world’s busiest museum a little more room to breathe.
Following our previous visit to Marcus Gleysteen Architects, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to Miami this week to explore the work of BMA Architects. Operating between Miami and New York, the firm has built a portfolio anchored by bespoke residential schemes that “celebrate modernism” and “embody the future of elevated living.” Among the firm’s work in Miami is a proposal for a high-rise tower in Brickell, which we reported on at the beginning of 2024. Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for a Senior Project Coordinator to join their Miami team. For candidates interested in applying for a position or anybody interested in learning more about the firm’s output, we have rounded up five residential projects by BMA Architects that exemplify the firm’s ethos.
