Sage & Coombe collective bargaining agreement begins, second U.S. firm to form union

New York City-based Sage & Coombe Architects has unanimously approved a collective bargaining agreement, becoming the second firm in the U.S. to unionize. The move comes after Bernheimer Architecture unionized in 2024.

The firm announced via Instagram last week that it had signed a collective bargaining agreement with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. “We respect the efforts of our colleagues who initiated this process, and we believe the agreement will affirm the workplace conditions we established over the last 30 years and contribute to our continuing success in delivering great projects for our clients,” the firm added.

The firm had initially announced the formation of a new union in 2023, beginning negotiations on the formation of the collective bargaining agreement that went into effect last week. In 2024, Bernheimer became the first architecture firm to ratify a collective bargaining agreement.
