Getty Center to close for major modernization from 2027 to 2028

The Getty Center will temporarily close to the public from March 15, 2027, through spring 2028 to undergo a comprehensive modernization program, the institution has announced. The nearby Getty Villa will remain open.

Described as the most significant upgrade since the Getty Center opened in 1997, the initiative focuses on improving visitor experience, accessibility, and energy resilience across the campus. Planned enhancements include revitalized gallery spaces, new artist commissions, and improved connections between art and the surrounding landscape.

Accessibility upgrades will include improvements to the site’s tram system, redesigned arrival and departure sequences, and enhanced wayfinding. The Welcome Hall will also be renovated to include a new cafe, bookstore, and retail areas.
