The much-anticipated opening in Los Angeles' Exposition Park is scheduled for September 22, bringing the institution's collection of visual storytelling into a 300,000-square-foot building designed by MAD Architects, with landscape architecture by Studio-MLA and Stantec serving as executive architect.
The museum design by MAD's Ma Yansong takes the form of a massive, hovering organic structure, lifted at its center and touching the ground at only a few points. A 185-foot-wide central arch connects the north and south lobbies, while an elliptical oculus four stories above the plaza creates a dramatic view back up to the sky. The exterior is wrapped in more than 1,200 individually shaped fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels, giving the structure its smooth, continuous skin.
