Kansas State University’s College of Architecture, Planning & Design has appointed journalist, design critic, and researcher Timothy Schuler as the inaugural director of its newly established Institute for Community Design & Research. The institute will serve as a hub for community-engaged design, research, and outreach across Kansas, connecting APDesign faculty and students with practitioners, public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local communities.

The institute’s work will address issues including housing, economic development, infrastructure, environmental resilience, and quality of life. Operating under a mission of “Serving Kansas through Design, Innovation, Service and Engagement,” the institute will build on APDesign’s existing community partnerships and interdisciplinary teaching and research. Planned activities include community design studios, rural design laboratories, summer fellowships, public workshops, and research collaborations.
