New nonprofit advances Indigenous representation across architecture and planning

The Indigenous Society of Architecture, Planning, and Design (ISAPD) has transitioned to an official nonprofit organization.

Founded by Indigenous scholars at the Yale School of Architecture in 2018, ISAPD was formed to advance Indigenous knowledge, representation, and leadership in architecture, planning, and design. It aims to elevate Indigenous perspectives and knowledge systems of the built environment in academia, practice, and other spaces that have historically failed to recognize them.

ISAPD’s work includes supporting Indigenous students and professionals through mentorship and networking, promoting Indigenous architectural sovereignty and environmental stewardship, creating educational and innovative resources and dialogue around Indigenous design knowledge, collaborating with tribal, academic, and community partners, and stewarding an increase of Indigenous representation in design professions.
