Record-setting Gordie Howe International Bridge opens to cross-border traffic between Canada and the U.S.

After years of planning and construction, the Gordie Howe International Bridge officially opened this week, with traffic now crossing between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan.
Despite strained trade relationships between Canada and the U.S. following Trump's new threats of 50% tariffs, the ribbon-cutting marked the successful completion of the first new border crossing between Ontario and Michigan in more than 60 years, as well as one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects completed in North America in recent decades.
Designed by AECOM and realized in collaboration with construction partners Dragados Canada, Fluor Corporation, and Aecon, the six-lane cable-stayed bridge is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long and boasts a 2,799-foot (853-meter) main span, the longest of its kind in North America.
