Sony Pictures to reopen Hollywood’s iconic Cinerama Dome

Sony Pictures Entertainment has announced plans to restore and reopen Hollywood’s landmark Cinerama Dome, bringing the historic theater back into operation after a six-year closure that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, designed by Welton Becket, will undergo restoration work beginning next month, with reopening targeted for early 2028.

The project will be operated by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment following the studio’s acquisition of the cinema chain in 2024. According to the announcement, the restoration will preserve the building’s historic character, including the Cinerama name, exterior branding, and its large-format curved-screen presentation.
